Suggestopedic Class Example: Basic Concepts in English (“Greetings and Introductions”)
Objective:
Students will recognize and use basic greetings and introductions in English (Hello, How are you?, My name is…, Nice to meet you).
Duration:
Approximately 45 minutes.
1. Classroom Preparation
• The classroom is decorated with colorful posters showing greetings and friendly expressions.
• Soft Baroque music is playing in the background (e.g., Bach or Vivaldi).
• Chairs are arranged in a semicircle to create a relaxed environment.
2. Presentation Phase (10 minutes)
• The teacher greets students in a theatrical and very friendly manner:
“Hello! How are you today? My name is Mr. Alex. What is your name?”
• Gestures, facial expressions, and a cheerful tone are used.
• Then, the teacher hands out a simple “script” (a short dialogue) featuring phrases such as:
• Hello!
• How are you?
• I’m fine, thank you.
• My name is Ana.
• Nice to meet you!
(The script includes side-by-side translations to make students feel more confident.)
3. Concert Phase (15 minutes)
a) Active Concert
• The teacher reads the script aloud with dramatization while students follow along.
• Background music continues at a moderate volume.
b) Passive Concert
• Students close their eyes or lean back in their chairs.
• The teacher reads again, more slowly and melodically, allowing students to “absorb” the language without pressure to understand every word.
4. Elaboration Phase (15 minutes)
• Students perform role-play activities in pairs, pretending to meet in different places (a party, a park, a school).
• Each pair improvises short conversations using the phrases learned.
Example:
A: “Hello! My name is Daniel.”
B: “Hi Daniel! I’m Laura. Nice to meet you!”
A: “Nice to meet you too!”
• Students applaud each other and are reminded that the most important thing is to try, without fear of making mistakes.
5. Free Production (5 minutes)
• A small “social gathering” is organized in the classroom where everyone must greet and introduce themselves freely.
• The teacher also participates, modeling a positive and relaxed attitude.
